French general strike will hit ferry crossings

Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets in towns and cities across the country last week after the government announced it plans to push through the reforms, which could extend the working week and make it easier for firms to lay off staff, without going to a parliamentary vote.

A general strike was due to be held across France on Tuesday, with the Condor Rapide crossing to St Malo facing lengthy delays as port workers joined the industrial action, and unions, including the powerful General Confederation of Labour, have called for rolling strikes of at least two days a week in response to the controversial reforms.

The departure of the crossing from the French port to Jersey on Tuesday was due to be delayed from 8 am to 2 pm, and the service from the Island to Guernsey delayed from 9 am to 3 pm, while the crossing from Jersey to St Malo, which was due to depart at 5.40 pm, was expected to leave at 6.30 pm.
