JERSEY should be a place where young people “believe we can have a future”, a 22-year-old St Clement parishioner has said as he confirmed he will be standing in the upcoming election.
Noah Jervis, who will be Reform Jersey’s youngest candidate, will be seeking one of the three Deputy seats available in St Clement. His party colleague Mick Robbins will also be standing in the parish.
Mr Jervis has previously been on the committee for Reform Youth, and is currently serving on the party executive committee. If successful, he would be one of the youngest ever States Members.
He said: “I am standing for election because I believe we need change, and I am ready to fight for it. I want Jersey to be a place that my peers and I believe we can have a future in.
“I personally know too many young people who plan to leave the Island due to cost-of-living and a lack of opportunities. I speak to local businesses every day in my work and know how hard they struggle with staffing and rent. I also listen to pensioners who, after working hard and giving back throughout their lives, are now struggling to pay their bills.
“Reform Jersey has shown that it has the vision and the knowhow to make a difference and improve the Island for everyone. I am particularly pleased that the party is committing to delivering a new youth centre in Le Squez, which is a big priority for me in the parish.”
Party Leader, Deputy Sam Mézec said: “Noah has been an activist for Reform Jersey for years now, including canvassing with us at the last election. He brings youth and energy to the party, with a strong sense of social and economic justice that is reflective of much of his generation. It is vital that we have young voices in the States Assembly, and Noah is the perfect candidate for this.”
Alongside Mr Jervis and Mr Robbins, incumbent Deputies Karen Wilson, Barbara Ward and Alex Curtis and former Deputy Lindsay Ash are set to be on the St Clement ballot paper. Deputy Sir Philip Bailhache is retiring from politics.
The election will take place on Sunday 7 June.
