TWO well-known English actors who have starred in popular British comedy series and crime dramas have joined the cast of Bergerac for its second series – with filming now “underway” in Jersey and the UK.

Adrian Edmondson, famous for his roles in The Young Ones and Bottom, and Lesley Sharp, known for her work in Scott & Bailey and After Life, will star in the rebooted detective drama.

It comes as those behind the new Bergerac TV show have said that filming for series two is now “underway” in the wake of successful location scouting.

Commissioned by BBC-owned broadcaster UKTV, the first season of the long-anticipated reboot – offering a “contemporary twist” on the popular 80s detective drama created by Robert Banks Stewart – launched in February on U and U&DRAMA.

Filming for a second series is due to take place across Jersey and Devon over the summer months.

Visit Jersey chief executive Tricia Warwick has previously said the organisation was “excited to see even more of our Island’s stunning landscapes and unique locations featured in series two”.

And Jersey Hospitality Association co-chief executive Marcus Calvani recently told the JEP that Gorey and the Havre des Pas Lido were set to contribute to the “obviously Jersey, external wow shots”.

The six-parter will return for a second instalment on the free streaming service next year.

Mr Edmondson will play Nigel, a new love interest for Bergerac’s mother-in-law, Charlie Hungerford (Zoë Wanamaker), while Ms Sharp will play a character named Monica.

Joining them as newcomers to the cast are Camilla Beeput, Turlough Convery, Jonathan Aris, Charles Dale, Georgina Rich, and Denzel Baidoo.

Returning cast members include Damien Molony and Zoë Wanamaker as well as Robert Gilbert, Chloé Sweetlove, Sasha Behar, Celine Arden and Luke Nunn.

In the second series, the central character starts to rebuild his life and tentatively begins dating, while his mother-in-law has a new partner.

However, Jim’s personal progress is interrupted when he is called to investigate the murder of a groom at a wedding reception. The investigation leads him to uncover cryptic clues from the victim’s last words.

This week, UKTV revealed that the new Bergerac had become the highest-rated programme on U&DRAMA, with 2.4 million consolidated viewers tuning in for the first series.
