A MAN who was found holding a can of lager with his car keys on his pillow has been banned from the roads for drink driving.

Michael Neilson was also sentenced to 70 hours of community service at the Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

He previously admitted to drink driving and failing to stop for police officers as he drove through the Tunnel on 23 March.

Police later found him at his home, intoxicated and holding a can of lager, with his car keys on his pillow.

A breath test showed 73 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath – more than double the legal limit of 35.

He told officers he was the only person who used the vehicle and admitted he couldn’t remember how much he had drunk.

The court heard he had struggled with alcohol following the breakdown of a long-term relationship and had since taken steps to address his drinking.

Magistrate David Le Cornu imposed a nine-month probation order with 70 hours of community service.

Neilson was also disqualified from driving for 20 months.
