THE Channel Islands’ top golfers were given a stern examination by a strong Hampshire County side, falling to defeat across a challenging weekend at Barton-on-Sea and Stoneham.
Saturday’s foursomes at Barton-on-Sea provided a competitive opening, with the Islanders showing glimpses of their quality against seasoned opposition.
Rory McKenna and Charlie Kiberd secured an impressive 2&1 victory, while Lewis Marley and Jack Mitchell battled well to earn a half. However, defeats for the pairings of Sam Quail and Josh Ozard (5&4), and Matthew Parkman alongside Tom Le Huray (1dn), left Hampshire with the early advantage.
Sunday’s singles at Stoneham proved a tougher test, with Hampshire’s depth and experience coming to the fore. The hosts claimed seven of the eight matches, underlining their strength across the board.
Despite the scoreline, there were still positives for the Channel Islands, most notably from newly crowned CI champion Sam Quail, who produced a composed display to halve his match against Sam Death.
Across the weekend, the Islands’ players were exposed to the level required to compete with one of England’s strongest county sides. Having come off the back of a high-quality Channel Islands final, where both Quail and Marley showcased exceptional form, the step up in opposition was always likely to be demanding.
While the results did not fall their way, the experience gained on two excellent courses against elite opposition will prove invaluable as the Islands’ leading golfers continue their development.
