AN otter house could be built for a new species in the early stages of coming to Jersey Zoo if enough money is raised and plans are approved.

In a recent planning application Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust proposed a “new otter house” and “replacement fencing” to an external enclosure and bridge.

The new home is intended for a new species of otters that it is in the early stages of bringing to the zoo, a Durrell spokesperson said.

In the application, designs submitted show the new otter house will be nearly nine squared meters in size.

They also reveal the walls will have a “chestnut” HardiePlank cladding finish on the south, east and west elevation.

Meanwhile, the new fencing proposed can be seen with a post and rail, about height of the distance of a typical person’s hip to the ground.

The designs show three types of what they call “typical fencing” – glazed panel, post & rail and solid paneling.

However, they added that as well as the application being given the green light, it is “dependent on fundraising”.

They welcome donations from the members of the public, trustees or businesses, who can get in touch by calling 860081 or emailing Alexandra.Shears@durrell.org.
