PATRICK GOUGE of ATF St Ouen Springfield scored a stunning 207 from 121 balls on Saturday against RGA Walkovers as they eased to a 168-run victory on the opening day of the 2026 domestic season.

Warm skies and a flat wicket greeted newly appointed Walkovers skipper Dan Birrell and SOS captain Harrison Carlyon in the middle as they tossed up., knowing a correct call could prove crucial.

It was Carlyon who called correctly and, sensibly, elected to bat first.

With the prospect of the most recent Jersey opening partnership of Carlyon and Gouge in front of them, the Walkovers bowling attack needed early wickets. And it was the skipper himself who did just that, finding Carlyon’s outside edge with a peach the first legitimate delivery of the season.

Gouge’s record-breaking knock featured 18 fours and 12 sixes amongst a partnership of 259 for the second wicket with Robbie Forrest, who also scored an excellent 85 Picture: GUARIN CLAYTON

With the introduction of Robbie Forrest, the reigning Premier Batter of the Year however, Walkovers would not taste success again for a long time. The score of 1-1 piled up until Forrest was finally dismissed for an excellent 85, contributing to a partnership of 259 with Gouge.

The innings was all about one man though. Gouge was utterly magnificent. His knock, the highest in ATF St Ouen Springfield club’s history, included 18 fours and 12 sixes and was completely chanceless.

Never looking out of breath despite the warmth of the day, himself and Forrest ran the fielders ragged, and punished the bad balls when it came. It was a good pitch and they filled their boots.

The wicket-keeper batter was eventually dismissed for 207, bowled by left-arm spinner Will Taylor, leaving the field to a deserved standing ovation.

A closing score of 326 for 3 was more than a mountain to climb for a weary Walkovers line up and it proved just so. The wind was out of the sails and the innings never amassed much momentum.

There were some bright moments for the hosts, with their own keeper-bat Drew Sylvester looking bright for his 36, Jacques Van Der Walt finding some early season form with 42 and the skipper himself battling cramp to score 28, but there was little else to write home about as they were bowled out for 158 in 35.2 overs.

ATF St Ouen Springfield have made an early statement with this win, while Walkovers will need to dust themselves off and come back fighting next time around. With a two week break now while the Jersey Men travel to Denmark next weekend, plenty of time for some extra training and some stretches for a few sore bodies!
