Gymnastics:Day shines brightest

The Regent girl scored consistently well to finish sixth in the Hampshire County Grades Competition last Sunday in Basingstoke.

The competition, hosted by Basingstoke Gymnastics Club, brought together 100 gymnasts from 14 clubs in Hampshire who were competing in Grades 6, 5 and 4.

Day and Emily Holland were two of 26 gymnasts in Grade 5 who performed on vault, asymmetric bars, beam, floor and range and conditioning and had to pass with a minimum score of 35 out of a possible 50.

A score of 42 points would qualify them for the South Region finals in Berkshire – and Day notched 42.80.

Holland also passed her grade with 37.40 – her best apparatus was the vault when she scored 9.15, the second highest mark in the grade.

In grade six 39 gymnasts competed with six Regent girls representing the club in their first UK competition.

Emily Botha, Jasmine O’Donoghue, Elizabeth Appleyard, Louise Mollet, Scarlett Moore and Catherine Bell all passed their grade and produced some excellent individual apparatus scores.

Mollet came second on the vault with 9.15 while Appleyard and O’Donoghue finished sixth and seventh on 8.85 and 8.80 respectively.

On the bars all the girls scored over 8.00 with Mollett, Appleyard and Bell’s consistency placing them in the top half of the group.

Mollet’s steady performance on the beam made her Regent’s highest scorer with 8.45 and placed her seventh overall.

Meanwhile Botha also performed well and her score of 8.40 placed her in overall tenth position.

Regent’s youngest gymnast, seven-year-old Jasmine O’Donoghue scored 7.75 on range and conditioning.
