JERSEY RFC have their sights set on a sweet 16 wins in succession in the Regional 2 South Central division, when they welcome Guildford to St Peter tomorrow.
Myles Landick’s side have enjoyed a dazzling season so far, sitting comfortably clear at the top of the league, 14 points off the chasing pack and with a 100% winning record.
Opponents Guildford currently sit in a respectable fifth position and are in decent form themselves, with two wins from their last three games.
The Islanders came out on top in the reverse fixture earlier in the season, winning 47-29 away to the Surrey-based side.
George Willmott, Euan Spencer and former Reds star Scott Van Breda each bagged themselves two tries that day.
RFC skipper Evan Whitson is not prepared to take his opponents lightly however.
He said: “Last week was a good result for us, but we are aware we were a bit loose defensively.
“We’ll be looking to correct that moving forward starting this week.
“We’ve trained superbly this week and will be looking to put in a real solid defensive performance against Guildford.”
Reminiscing on the reverse fixture in October, Whitson said of his opposition: “Guildford are a good side.
“They will be up for the challenge of travelling over here and will compete for the full 80 minutes, no doubt about it.
“They gave us a hard game at their place, they have a strong offensive game with good attackers and wingers.
“We don’t take any team lightly in this league, no matter what the league table says.
“We still have improvements to make and we are gong to have to be right on it this weekend both defensively and on the attack.”
With both the men’s and women’s RFC sides currently top of their respective divisions, the Welshman reflected on how proud he is to be in a position of authority in such a thriving rugby community.
“I feel completely honoured to have been chosen to lead this group,” the forward added.
“Not being originally from Jersey, for Myles [Landick] to trust me with leading the team on the field is a privilege I don’t take lightly.
“I thoroughly enjoy the responsibility of trying to lead from the front every game.
“Everything is always about looking forward in the Jersey set-up, from seniors down to the juniors.
“It’s incredibly exciting to be a part of and I’m excited for what the future holds for us all involved.”
Action from St Peter tomorrow is set to get underway at 2.15pm.
