JERSEY needs a “skills audit” to “grow and retain talent”, a professor and media law specialist has said as she declared for Deputy.

Claire de Than, who chaired the Jersey Law Commission, is a supporter of Value Jersey and will be seeking one of the four seats available in St Helier Central.

She said: “I am standing for Deputy of St Helier Central because I have lived and worked in Jersey for long enough to know what is wonderful, and elsewhere for long enough to know what needs to change. I am offering to use my 30 years of relevant skills, experience and education to enhance the strengths and help to fix what doesn’t work. That needs to be done by working well with others, and I combine leadership experience with hands-on teamwork in everything I do.”

Ms de Than added that she advises government about “creating laws which work and fixing those which are broken” and has experience working in “many fields”.

We need a skills audit, so that we know what Jersey’s strengths and opportunities are, and can grow and retain talent,” she continued. “We need to work with key stakeholders from the beginning of a policy or plan, and listen to them. We need to make policies and laws properly the first time, on the basis of evidence, and with consideration of the impact they will have on individuals, businesses, charities and the economy. We need to support people at critical life stages.

“But the current system doesn’t work as a team. We need more candidates making the same promises if we are to actually deliver upon them.

That’s why I am also supporting Value Jersey’s Priorities: more cheaper choices like cheaper supermarkets, cheaper taxis, and cheaper loans; cutting government waste; rebooting local economy.”
