WITH festive lights beginning to glow and Christmas edging ever closer, there was still no time for seasonal rest across the local football calendar as clubs battled through a packed weekend of league and cup action.
While many are counting down to mince pies and family gatherings, Jersey’s players were instead lacing up their boots with statement results across the divisions in a typically uncompromising pre-Christmas programme.
The action got under way on Friday night under the lights at Springfield Stadium, where Madeira welcomed a St Brelade First side keen to build momentum.
The visitors revelled in the pristine surface and produced one of their most complete displays of the campaign, running out emphatic 5-0 winners against the league’s bottom side.
Declan O’Connell set the tone after 23 minutes before Leighton Gilroy struck on the stroke of half-time.
Gilroy added his second shortly after the restart to effectively end the contest, and even the dismissal of Leonardo Figuera on the hour mark did little to halt St Brelade’s dominance.

Jack Gibson and Daniel Andrade added further gloss in the closing stages to complete a commanding victory which lifts Brelade level on points with St Paul’s, while Madeira remain rooted to the foot of the table with just one win from nine outings.
Elsewhere in Premiership 1, St Peter’s finally rediscovered the winning formula that had eluded them since September, progressing in the JFA Cup Le Riche Trophy with a hard-fought 2-1 home victory over St Ouen’s.
Luke Lister was the difference, opening the scoring after 23 minutes before Renato Geraldo levelled for the visitors. With the tie finely poised, Lister struck again on 73 minutes to send the Crosskeys through and provide a timely boost ahead of the festive period.

St Clement completed the top-flight action with a ruthless cup display at Le Boulivot, sweeping aside Grouville Reserves 9-0.
Karl Hinds continued his prolific season by netting four goals for the third time this campaign, while Jay Dos Santos marked his return to local football in stunning fashion with a nine-minute hat-trick either side of half-time.
Darren Coyle and Seaney McColgan also found the net as the Premiership 1 title contenders continued to impress.
Sporting Academics showed their resilience and title credentials in the JFA Cup with a thrilling 4-3 comeback win over St John First. Leonardo Pereira gave St John an early lead before Diogo Franca replied almost immediately.
An Ethan Boudin brace then sent St John into the break 3-1 ahead, but Sporting Accies roared back in the second half.
Jamie Savory struck twice to restore parity before substitute James Walsh completed the turnaround with a decisive 86th-minute winner, preserving the Academics’ unbeaten record this season.
Championship 1 also delivered key moments, with Jersey Wanderers Reserves claiming an important 2-1 away win at St Brelade Reserves.
Hugo Pereira and Luke Roscouet were on target for Wanderers, cancelling out Oliver Tomlinson’s opener and closing the gap on leaders St Ouen’s and St Clement Reserves to just a single point.
St Clement Reserves kept pace at the top with a convincing 5-2 victory over St Peter Reserves.
Goals from Adam Falle, Taylor Roche, Alex Ross, Harry Davy and Dylan McDonald proved decisive, despite Fergus Fox and Andrew Vaughan responding for St Peter, who remain bottom of the division as the title race tightens.
The Jersey Dog Club Challenge Cup saw First Tower United advance with a composed 3-1 win over Rozel Rovers Reserves.
Harmon Onyango, James Le Leivre and Ben Hagin all found the net to secure passage into the next round, where First Tower are set to face Grouville C on February 10.
With Christmas now firmly on the horizon, the weekend’s action ensured there was no shortage of conversation in the island’s footballing circles, as teams look to carry momentum into the new year.
