Mark Baker (33528395)

ST Mary is set to host a three-way battle for the Constable seat after a business speaker and author confirmed he would be standing.

Mark Baker stood for the parish Deputy seat in 2018 but lost out to David Johnson, who has since become Constable. Mr Johnson is seeking re-election as Constable, with Ivor Barette also standing.

St Mary was the only parish to host contested Constable votes at both the 2014 and 2018 elections, while four years ago, Mr Johnson beat former BBC journalist Mike Fennell.

Confirming his candidacy, Mr Baker said: “St Mary is not just where I live. It is part of who I am.

“My family’s roots here stretch back centuries. I grew up with a deep sense of belonging, where neighbours knew each other, where people looked out for one another, and where the parish felt like a true community. Many of you will remember that feeling too.

“And many of you will feel what I feel now. That something has changed.

“I speak to people across the parish and I hear the same concerns. Young families struggling to find a home. Whilst parents and grandparents wave goodbye to their families. Older residents feeling isolated. Volunteers giving their time but not always getting the support they deserve. You are not wrong to feel that way. And you are not alone.”

He said that, if elected, he would plan to run two community events per year – a parish picnic and outdoor Christmas carol service where “old and new members of the community reinstate that feeling of connection that we all need and strive for”.

“We also need pride in our parish again. Cleaner and safer roads, and support for those who give their time to serve others, especially our amazing honorary police. Working closely with parish staff, volunteers, I will focus on keeping St Mary a place where people feel respected, connected and proud to live,” he added.

“My background in leadership, strategy and communication has taught me how to bring people together and get things done. But more importantly, I care deeply about this parish and the people in it.”

Islanders will head to the polls on Sunday 7 June.
