Celebration for Lisia’s crew after test of endurance

After more than 13½ hours of sailing, Mark Tucker’s Lisia won the 40-mile race, while some of the faster boats took around 12 hours to finish what would normally be a six-to-seven-hour race.

It was sunshine, a fresh southwesterly breeze and moderate seas that greeted the boats as they came to the line off the Baleine buoy in St Aubin’s Bay for the 9.30 am start.

Unfortunately for the faster boats, the wind dropped as the they sailed southwards, with lumpy seas knocking what wind there was out of their sails and making progress a frustrating experience.

Sot it was after more than 13½ hours that, Mark Tucker’s Westerly Merlin, Lisia, the smallest boat in the fleet, struck gold taking the race by six minutes from Trevor Beaton in Ocean Star.

In third was David de Carteret (Oz.Pom)
