MIXED weather looks set to arrive in time for the long weekend, with forecasters warning that it could feel more like March than May by Sunday.
After a settled spell of high pressure that brought a high temperature within 0.3°C of the all-time record for April, those venturing out this weekend may need some warmer clothing and – tomorrow at least – an umbrella.
Jersey Met’s forecast shows that after a largely dry day today, with a maximum temperature of 19°C, there will be a risk of showers from late tonight.
Gareth Powell, senior forecaster, said: “There’s the potential for showers throughout the day on Saturday, and some of them could be quite heavy, with a small risk of thunderstorms.”
Although tomorrow’s maximum temperature is predicted to be 22°C, there will be a sharp drop for the rest of the holiday weekend.
“It will feel like we’ve regressed a couple of months, from temperatures well above average to below what we’d normally expect,” Mr Powell added.
Accompanied by brisk north-easterly winds of around force five, Sunday’s maximum is forecast to be 15°C, with Monday predicted to be a degree lower.
Those attending the Barclays Boat Show on Sunday or Monday should at least be able to stay dry, with only a slim chance of showers on those days.
The change in weather comes after a peak temperature of 25.9°C on Wednesday, the last day of April. Jersey Met said this was the third-highest figure recorded during April since records began in 1894, with the all-time record being a maximum of 26.2°C on 22 April 1984.
Temperatures have also been very high across large parts of the UK over the past week, with the UK Met Office predicting figures of 10°C above the average for the time of year in some areas.
