A SUPERMARKET chain has shared tips on how Islanders can avoid wasting food during an awareness week aiming to tackle the issue.

Food Waste Action Week runs until Sunday and to mark the event, the Channel Islands Coop said it wanted to inform Islanders how they could “take small steps that can make a big impact”.

The supermarket said food waste was “one of the biggest environmental and social challenges of our time”, with edible food thrown away every day while families in need struggle.

To combat food waste, the Coop suggested that consumers should download the Olio app, which markets surplus food for discounted rates in all parish stores. It also said Islanders should “think before they throw” and find new ways to use leftovers, as well as look for yellow-label-sticker offers. It added that the public should also “spread the word” about food waste to make a bigger impact.

In a statement, the Coop said: “Reducing food waste is about doing what’s right. It’s about using our resources wisely, supporting local people and showing that businesses can and should take responsibility for their impact.”

Since launching its own food-sharing initiative last year, the Coop said it had:

  • Donated over 46,000kg of food to local households.
  • Provided over 81,000 meals.
  • Prevented over 146,000kg of CO² emissions.
  • Saved 273,000 litres of water to produce food.
