The event, which culminated with a 15-minute fire display, has taken place for two decades, but was last year cancelled because of competition from the Waterfront bonfire and fireworks display.
Steve Rondel, from the Gorey Fete Committee, which organises the bonfire, said that the event was ‘better than could ever have been expected’. ‘It was an absolutely brilliant evening. The weather was perfect and people really turned up in their droves. We thought we could get 4,000 people, so to have 6,000 was really amazing. We had people of all ages come – grandparents, toddlers, families of four and five – and there was a fantastic atmosphere around the parish green.’
The total raised for charity is not yet known.
