My very first Battle was in 1949 or 1950 on a float, I think, was called Playtime, entered by the Le Sueur Family (Eileen and Jack) and built at their farm, Château Clairval. I was on a swing in an organdie dress and the float was covered in chicken wire with loads of hydrangeas dropped through. It was very pretty.

How have you been involved over the years since?

I have been involved over the past 50 years with helping , but mainly with choreography for various exhibitors. I was the first to introduce a dance team in front of a float for the Chamber of Commerce, designed by Bob Moyse and Lloyd Cornish, in the 1960s.

What are you doing this year?

This year I am again doing choreography for St Brelade’s float, Matryoshka. The theme is Russian Dolls and it’s designed by Simon Thomas and Nigel Gates – it is going to be amazing!

Who do you think has been the best Mr Battle to date and who would you like to see in the role and why?

What’s the best float you’ve ever seen in the Battle and why?

Hana Matsuri. A St Brelade’s float going back to 1970. It was awarded the Prix d’Honneur and was the most artistic and beautiful float that I can remember.

Why do you love being involved with the Battle?

Battle is one of the best dates in the Jersey diary. It involves all ages of the community and is very addictive. Once you have got involved, you just keep going back. Long may it continue!
