Hundreds clapped and cheered as Assistant Chief Minister Sir Philip Bailhache dismissed the property developer’s £14m estimate of the land’s value as ‘laughable’.

The former Bailiff, who will lead next week’s States debate on behalf of ministers, revealed that a new valuation put the value of the headland site of the now-derelict Pontins Holiday Village significantly below the £7.8 million of a previous States estimate.

Trevor Hemmings, the property developer who owns the site, and his architect, Paul Harding, who also attended last night’s meeting, now say that site is worth £14 million. That valuation follows the recent granting of planning permission for 28 homes there.
