The image, Equanimity, was presented to the London gallery last night in honour of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year.

Jersey Heritage originally commissioned artist Chris Levine to create the £150,000 holographic portrait in 2004 to commemorate the Island’s 800 year relationship with the Crown.

Mr Levine created the image, which has gained international acclaim, with holographer Rob Munday.

About 200 people including British MPs, international ambassadors and high-profile figures in the art world, were on hand for the official ceremony.

Prominent modern artist Damien Hirst is believed to be among those who attended.

Senator Gorst, who represented Jersey along with the Lieutenant-Governor, General Sir John McColl, and the Bailiff, Michael Birt, said that is was an important occasion for the Island.

He said: ‘Yesterday we were gifting the holographic image to the National Portrait Gallery in honour of Her Majesty as our contribution to the Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

‘It was put on display in a gallery of portraits of Her Majesty and it got pride of place right in the entrance.

‘It seemed to be well received and we’ve already have some thank you notes from a number of people who attended who felt that it was a great success for Jersey demonstrating its allegiance to the crown in this Diamond Jubilee year.’

Senator Gorst said that the evening provided an opportunity for Jersey to strengthen its relationship with the UK – the Island’s most important economic partner.

He added that Jersey should continue to proactively build on relations with UK and celebrate its link to the monarchy.

Equanimity, and another image taken during the same sittings with the Queen, called Lightness of Being – which shows the Queen with her eyes shut, are both part of the National Portrait Gallery exhibition marking the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The exhibition, entitled The Queen: Art and Image, were selected as the 60 most iconic images of the Queen during her reign and has already been on show in Edinburgh, Belfast and Cardiff.
