Previous rent increases have been snapped up by the Treasury department and put into General Reserves, but Housing are facing a dramatic funding shortfall.

The Whitehead report into the provision of social housing in Jersey last year found that the department needed another £7.5m a year to maintain their homes.

An increase of 2.5% would yield around £800,000.

Housing Minister Terry Le Main said: ‘We will be coming back to the States with a funding proposal to meet that £7.5m. No doubt about it – there will be rent increases. We need to keep more of it and stop the Treasury Minister grabbing it.’
