Airports across the UK were battling to reopen today after the blizzard conditions caused havoc for thousands of travellers.

Gatwick, Luton, Birmingham and Southampton airports were shut overnight. Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds Bradford airports were also forced to close temporarily yesterday after the cold snap worsened in the North. These closures affected the early morning flights to and from the Island.

Steve Read, terminal and security manager at Jersey Airport, said: ‘Jersey Airport is open and the runway and stands were de-iced overnight. Unfortunately there were a series of cancellations to Gatwick on the red-eye and mid-morning flights. The Liverpool flight has been cancelled and all flights to Guernsey have been delayed.’
