BUSINESSES in Jersey are being encouraged to support local students by offering them paid work experience as part of the Undergraduate Internship Programme.

The States-run scheme is now in its fourth year and has so far given more than 180 young Islanders the chance to experience life at a wide range of businesses.

However, in previous years more students than businesses have taken part in the scheme, meaning that young people have had to be turned away. As a result, Jersey Enterprise is appealing earlier this year, in the hope that more companies will come forward.

Last year the programme saw 44 undergraduates placed with 40 employers. The previous year there were 94 students at 78 businesses, and in 2006 there were 50 young people at 45 employers.

Economic Development Minister Alan Maclean said that he hoped more businesses would put themselves forward for the scheme this year.
