TOM BROWN and Jo Gorrod were the respective men’s and ladies’ race winners in the HSBC Private Bank 10 km road race from Gorey Village yesterday.
In bright sunshine but a strong easterly wind 127 winners set out for Archirondel before heading back to the finish at Longbeach car park, but without anyone willing to lead, the runners at the front played a cagey waiting game. This was reflected on the slow times which resulted in a sprint to the finish for the first three as the pace hotted up in the last kilometre.
Brown managed to just outsprint Dave Ibbotson (34.39 to 34.48) with Toby Edwards only four seconds adrift in third, ahead of first veteran Phil Ahier (35.17). Ahier was followed home by pre-race favourite Dan Halksworth who then left to compete in the long distance swimming championships.
Gorrod won the Ladies’ race unchallenged in 38.15. Her participation had been delayed until the eleventh hour, however, as she had injured her foot after a fall 48 hours before, ‘Its not a serious blow and I’ll be 100 per cent fit in two weeks time when I make my marathon debut,’ said Gorrod.
