Cann, the No 2 seed, beat Commonwealth champion, Tracey Hallam, her main rival, in straight sets in the final to secure the crown for the third time in four years.

The match, a 21-15, 21-19 display, was a repeat of the 2005 final in which the Jersey star won her first singles title.

‘I knew I would have to play well to beat Tracey,’ said the Middlesex-based player.

‘We know how to play each other so I had to really focus and it was just about who had the edge on the day.

‘The first time you win the Nationals is always going to be more exciting but I’m always glad to win it as this competition has a great prestige to it – it’s good to be a national champion.’

Cann, currently world ranked 30, came through a testing quarter-final match against Sarah Renton 19-21, 21-14, 21-19 to set up a semi-final against Fontaine Chapman who was dismissed 21-10, 21-13.

‘I was just concentrating on getting through one match at a time but seeded second everyone is out to beat you,’ added the former Beaulieu student who had support at the Manchester Velodrome from her parents and friends from Jersey.

‘The first match I came through comfortably but the second, the quarter-final, was harder than I expected.

It was quite a close game and I had to fight and scrap through.

The semi-final I won quite easily and then it was the final.’

Cann, who has her sights set on reaching the top 16 in the world rankings to secure a place at this year’s Olympics, added: ‘I’ve got a Uber Cup team event with England next week so no rest I’ll be getting straight back into training for that.’

In the men’s singles Jersey’s Mark Constable (No 7) upset the seedings as he knocked out the fourth seed in the quarter-final 21-10, 21-17 to reach the last four.

Constable, who won the title in 2002, almost upset the seedings again in the next round but was ousted by the No 1, Rajiv Ouseph, 21-14, 17-21, 21-13 – Ouseph went on to win the title.

Mariana Agathangelou, who was knocked out in the second round of the mixed doubles, made it to the quarter-finals with women’s doubles partner Gabby White but the young pair were beaten by Sarah Bok and Liza Smith 21-10, 21-14.

Kim Ashton was knocked out in the first round, losing to Fontaine Chapman 21-14, 21-7.
