The Jersey contingent had little rest and all swam big programmes but despite that fact they still achieved over 70 long course best times and 14 Southern Counties qualifying times.

Tony Manning and Sarah-Jane Smith were gold medal winners while Tom Gallichan just missed out on his first National qualifying time for the season.

Manning touched home in 2 minutes and 26 seconds to win the 11-and-under boys’ 800 metre freestyle while Smith won the 18-and-over girls’ 200m breast-stroke in 2.47.

Gallichan went perilously close to a NQT missing out by just .04 of a second in the 200 back for 15-and-under boys.

Charlotte Manning also won bronze in the girls’ 13-and-under breast-stroke.

Tigers coach Nathan J?gou said: ‘We’re still waiting ratification of the times from the gala but we know it was a success with many very good performances from our swimmers.

‘Sheffield is the first long course gala of the swimming year and many of the youngsters were competing long course for the first time.

For the seniors it was all about attempting to gain National qualifying times.’

There were a few excellent new personal bests from the young Tigers, including a 63.0 seconds 100m freestyle from Danielle de Bourcier in the girls’ 15-and-under group.

Kerrie Smith touched home in 2.17 in the 14-and-under 200 free while Henry Jobin went 2.26 in the boys’ 11-and-under 200 free.
