The 32-seat Dornier aircraft started transporting passengers to Geneva and Zurich last week, re-establishing a former Crossair route that ceased operating in 2002.

To launch the new service, a delegation of Island financiers and politicians joined the inaugural flight to Geneva to meet the Swiss economic affairs counsellor among other delegates.

In a number of welcoming speeches, the similarities between Switzerland and Jersey were remarked upon by Economic Development assistant minister Alan Maclean and by the Swiss Conseiller d’Etat, Francois Longchamp.

Deputy Maclean said: ‘Swiss and Jersey people have a number of common traits – independence, a pride for our unique systems of parliamentary democracy, a love of water, whether it be the sea or lakes, as well as an appreciation of the immense importance of our respective financial centres.
