The group, aged between 19 and 38 years old, will be based at Basra Airport with the 21 Engineer Regiment, a regular army unit that provides engineer support by maintaining water and electricity supplies. They will be away from their families for Christmas. The posting comes at a time when the future of the local territorial unit is the subject of political debate after Senator Stuart Syvret said that it should be scrapped. It also follows the safe return of four Jersey Field Squadron members from tours of duty in Helmand province in Afghanistan For the past three months the group have been based in Germany working on their individual and team tactical skills, including weapon and convoy drills, patrolling and leadership and command skills in preparation for the trip that will see them supporting troops currently working in Basra.
