The position has been left vacant by the dismissal of Senator Stuart Syvret by the States last week. Senator Routier stood against Senator Syvret for the job in 2002, losing out by 23 votes to 28. If he gets the job when Members vote to elect a new Health Minister tomorrow or Wednesday, Senator Walker says that he will nominate Assistant Treasury Minister Deputy Ian Gorst to take over as Social Security Minister. There will be a contested election for Health, after Senator Ben Shenton announced his intention to stand, following in the footsteps of his father, Dick Shenton, who presided over the Health Committee up until 1999.
