Goodall lost to the unseeded Austrian Sandbichler – three hundred places further down the rankings in world tennis – by two sets to one.

Every set was a close-run affair with neither player giving an inch.

Goodall won the first set 7-6 in a tie-break but then lost the next set 6-4.

The final set went to a tiebreak after Goodall had stormed into a 4-1 lead, the Austrian clawing his way back to win with an amazing few last points 7-6.

Sandbichler now faces the only remaining seed, Lugassy from France, in today’s final at 10.30 am.

He defeated Wolmarans of South Africa in an excellent match that went to two set tie-breaks.

And even the tie breaks were close run affairs , the Frenchman winning 8-6 and 7-5.

The Ladies $10,000 event, however, went to form with the top seed Widmer having an easy win against Doernemann 6-2, 6-4.

Pavelec, seeded three, defeated Veselinovic 6-3, 6-3 while the two Brits had contrasting games; O’Donoghue, seeded 4 went through against Schoeffel 6-3, 7-5; but the amazing run by Bann came to an end with a 6-3, 6-2 loss against Benemar from France.

This was Bann’s best set of results and the furthest she has gone in an ITF event.
