THE Jersey Festival Choir is celebrating its 70th anniversary with a special performance of Elijah next month.
The concert will take place at the St Helier Methodist Centre on Saturday 2 May at 7.30pm.
The choir was founded in 1956 following a landmark performance of Messiah, when singers from across Jersey came together to perform one of the best-known choral works.
The success of that event led to the formation of an independent choir dedicated to staging large-scale choral music locally.
Over the past seven decades, the group has built a reputation for ambitious performances, with major works such as The Creation and Elijah forming a core part of its repertoire.
The anniversary concert marks a return to Elijah, widely regarded as one of the most dramatic works in choral music, and one that the choir has not performed since 2006.
The oratorio tells the story of the Old Testament prophet and is known for its powerful contrasts, from thunderous choruses to quieter, reflective passages.
The performance will feature a line-up of soloists alongside choir and orchestra, conducted by musical director William Millow, continuing a family link with the ensemble dating back to its early years.
A spokesperson said: “This is a really special concert for us. Elijah has been part of the choir’s history, and it feels the perfect choice to mark our 70th anniversary. It’s powerful, dramatic, and a wonderful piece to experience live.”
The choir continues to welcome new members of all ages and abilities, with rehearsals set to resume in September.
Tickets cost £18 online plus booking fee or £20 on the door.
