At the end of yesterday’s States sitting, politicians voted by 27 to 21 to delay the debate rather than sitting today to talk about the five options that have been produced by the Privileges and Procedures Committee. Senator Stuart Syvret proposed delaying the ‘in committee’ debate – where Members can discuss the options but not take a vote – on the grounds that there are a series of public meetings on the proposals. He said he wanted to hear the views of the public, and listen to any suggestions made, before politicians discuss the issue. He also argued that the timing of any States debate would not make any practical difference to the timetable of reform. But Privileges president, the Constable of St Clement, Derek Gray, said that as a Mori poll was to be conducted in the next few days, he felt it was important that the views of politicians were known.
