Health Minister Stuart Syvret has ordered a review into Jersey’s legal options to investigate whether the Island has to follow European Union regulations that require all products to be labelled in the language of the country in which they are sold.
‘I have asked my officers to undertake a review into whether a change of approach needs to be made,’ said Senator Syvret.
‘I’m not sure at this stage what the result will be.
We are linked with the EU in terms of trade, and there may be legal reasons why we have to stick to EU law.’ Economic Development Minister Philip Ozouf is also keen for the issue to be looked at again and has written to Senator Syvret.
He said that Jersey should defy the EU and allow food from France to be labelled in French.
Senator Ozouf feels that as an Island with such a strong French heritage – not to mention geographical proximity – Jersey should not make it more difficult for supermarkets and markets to stock French goods.
