Senator-elect Terry Le Main made an impassioned plea yesterday for the States to get to grips with funding repairs and maintenance on homes of Islanders in public sector accommodation.

During the Budget preamble debate in the States, he said that the sale of housing was the only way of securing the money to look after the 5,000 units of accommodation that his department runs.

He said that his patience was wearing thin, and that the proposal to incorporate the department had to be passed sooner rather than later under the ministerial system that comes in next week.

‘Some properties need attention – yes, they need maintenance,’ said the Deputy, who was promoted to the Senatorial benches in the recent election.

‘They are not at the point where people cannot live in them at present, but we have nearly 5,000 properties.

That is far too many.

‘There has to be some disposal of properties back into the marketplace.’
