The committee were told by the States last month to reconsider rules barring anyone but farmworkers from living in flats at Gary and Jo Barette’s property, La Recolte des Fruits, in St Martin.

However, the Environment and Public Services Committee – with only three members sitting, two of whom lost their seats in Wednesday’s Deputies’ elections – has ruled that the flats must be readvertised as farm accommodation.

The States backed a proposal brought by Senator Shenton in October by 31 votes to 12 forcing the committee to reconsider the condition the accommodation be rented only to farmworkers.

But the three committee members, Deputy Mike Taylor, who was in the chair, Deputy Jacqui Huet and St John Constable Richard Dupré, decided that they would not reverse the original decision and that the Barettes must readvertise the flats for rent for agricultural staff.
