Twenty-three Deputies were elected in all.

Nine of them will be new to the House and six of those are businessmen – two accountants, one estate agent, a marketing expert, a cinema owner and a marine consultant – continuing the trend started in last month’s Senatorial round when three business people were swept in despite being political novices.

But the death knell for party politics may have also been sounded too early – the Jersey Democratic Alliance saw its chairman, Deputy Geoff Southern, deputy chairman Deputy Judy Martin and member Shona Pitman all elected, although they all stood as independents.

The turnout across the Island had been widely predicted to be low and it was – around two-thirds of registered voters not bothering to turn out on a crisp but bright autumn’s day.
