A senior member of the Royal Family will also be in the Island on 9 May to meet Islanders and take part in the events.

The return to Jersey of up to 50 of the surviving members of Force 135 was announced today at the launch of the programme of celebration and commemoration taking place in May.

On 8 May the veterans will take part in a march-past from Liberation Square to the Royal Square for a thanksgiving service and Islanders will be asked to line the streets of St Helier dressed in period costume to cheer them on.

The Bailiff, Sir Philip Bailhache , said it would be a day that would touch every Islander.

He said: ‘I hope that Liberation 60 will be a moving experience for those who remember the Occupation years personally, but that it will also be a celebration of an Island confident in its sense of identity and cultural heritage in the modern world, and committed to the process of reconciliation.’
