By the end of yesterday, the sum raised was recorded by staff at the States Treasury as £1,054,178.

Appeal president the Bailiff, Sir Philip Bailhache, has described the response by Islanders as an ‘unprecedented expression of their concern for those affected by the tragedy’.

The sum does not include the additional £500,000 grant from the Jersey Overseas Aid Committee towards relief work in those areas of south-east Asia devastated by the tsunamis.

News that public donations had reached over £1 million was welcomed this morning by Sir Philip.

‘I am delighted by the warmth and generosity of the public’s response to the appeal and want to thank everyone who has contributed in whatever way and those who continue to work to raise funds for the appeal,’ he said.

Appeal chairman Mike Wavell said there had never been such an indication of the community of Jersey pulling together so much.
