Work on windfarm south of Jersey could start next year

Ailes Marines said they hoped that the 62-turbine windfarm in waters off the French town of St Brieuc would become operational by 2020.

The company had been given permission to construct the 2.5 billion euro facility by the French government in 2012 but had to seek approval from the prefecture of the Côtes-d’Armor region in order to go ahead with the project. This permission has now been granted.

Dr Magris, director for environmental policy for Jersey’s Environment Department, said that computer-generated images provided by Ailes Marines indicated that turbines would be visible from the south coast on a clear day.

In August – in line with the demands of the prefecture – a public inquiry was launched and presentations were held in a number of locations across northern France and also in Jersey.

A total of 29 comments were submitted by Islanders and the States about the windfarm. Among the concerns raised was about the amount of research done to assess the impact the windfarm would have on the Minquiers reef.
