students in the classroom training

TEN new student officers will formally complete their initial training this week as the States police holds its 2026 Pass Out Parade.

The ceremony will take place on Friday at the Army Reserve Centre on Mount Bingham – marking the end of an intensive 20-week training programme.

The occasion is being described as a “significant milestone” for the force as it is the first cohort to complete their training in Jersey since 2015 which the police said reflects the “renewed investment in on-Island training and development”.

Previously, student officers were required to travel weekly to Norfolk for ten weeks of training before returning to Jersey for a further three-week course covering local laws and procedures.

The force announced last year that it would bring the entire training programme back to the Island in a move expected to save around £150,000 annually in training and travel costs previously paid to Norfolk Constabulary.

It is also hoped that the change will make recruitment more accessible for those with family commitments or caring responsibilities, while widening the potential pool of applicants and improving diversity among recruits.

The local programme is intended to give the force greater control over training content, ensuring Jersey laws and operational procedures are fully integrated into the course, while supporting the professional development of local trainers.

Friday’s traditional ceremonial event will include an inspection of officers, formal speeches and a march past, alongside a police demonstration showcasing officer safety training, specialist equipment and vehicles.

Senior representatives including police chief Robin Smith and Home Affairs Minister Mary Le Hegarat are expected to attend the parade.

Awards will also be presented to recognise outstanding achievement during the programme, including prizes for the fittest male and female recruits, academic excellence and a trainers’ award for leadership, determination and teamwork.

Each student officer will receive a framed certificate marking the successful completion of the training course.
