GUY THOMPSON is keen to make the most of any remaining opportunities to play alongside the ‘aggressive’ style of Wes White, after combining well with the Bath-bound back-rower at London Scottish.
Thompson scored twice in Jersey Reds’ Championship Cup first round, second-leg victory at the Richmond Athletic Ground on Saturday, thrusting himself firmly into contention for a place among the starting XV for this Friday’s quarter-final first leg at Hartpury.
Following wholesale changes to the side which began the first leg a fortnight earlier, the 35-year-old was named alongside White and Alex Humfrey at the back of the pack.
Jersey’s forwards contributed to seven of the eight tries scored in a 54-7 win.
‘I’m getting towards the end of the career so any chance I get to play with the boys is a privilege,’ said former Wasps and Leicester Tigers man Thompson, who could hang up his boots this summer.
‘It’s always nice to get on the scoresheet, especially after missing a lot of games through injury this season and with other boys playing well in my position.
‘It’s incredible playing with Wes, or Lewis Wynne, who’s so mature in his play. Seeing them develop … it’s a pleasure to play with them. And Wes is so aggressive and I feel we complement each other well. All the forward unit do, as we knuckle down together.
‘I’m really enjoying playing with them, and especially Wes while he’s still here. Hopefully we’ll have a few more games in the cup yet.’
nQuarter-final winners will progress to a one-off semi-final on the weekend of 14 May. Jersey or Hartpury will meet either Doncaster Knights or Coventry at home in the last-four.
