AUSTRALIAN Richard Green won the 2022 Jersey Legends at La Moye after beating former Open champion Paul Lawrie in a sudden-death play-off.

Green and 2016 Ryder Cup vice-captain Lawrie both finished on ten-under yesterday afternoon, after three rounds of golf over the weekend, and were tied again after a play-off on the 17th and 18th holes.

Both returned to the 17th for the sudden death and Green prevailed after Lawrie bogied.

Green picked up the 45,000 euros winner’s cheque and the Tommy Horton Trophy and made a special thanks to Jersey, saying he hopes to return to spend more time on the Island.

‘It was very exciting,’ Green said of the sudden-death play-off.

‘To play against Paul [Lawrie] in the heat of the battle is always going to be tough. He’s been a tough competitor in his career. But it felt great to test again under pressure and I am very pleased to come out on top.

‘I’ve loved every minute of my time here since I’ve arrived. I’ve been able to play at the Royal Jersey and play here and I just love the place. I fell in love with the golf, the people in Jersey, everybody that I’ve met.

‘I’ve had a great time and really want to come back and spend more time here.’

It was a closely fought contest, with Green and Lawrie matching each other stroke for stroke throughout to see off the challenge of second-round leader Philip Price. Both carded scores of 68, 67 and 71.

Islander Ian Woosnam ended the weekend tied in 32nd, on three over par.

Meanwhile, Swiss visitor Silvia Caduff won the amateur Stableford contest, ahead of former Liverpool and England footballer Robbie Fowler. Jersey’s Chris Morris and Steven Anderson tied for third.

Fowler won the Celebrity Series event on Thursday, ahead of former Wales rugby union international Scott Quinnell.
