Jersey’s Over-50s walking football side produced a series of performances to be proud of as they competed against international opposition in a tournament held in Wigan over the weekend.
The islanders opened their campaign with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Scotland, conceding a late goal in an otherwise closely contested encounter. They responded in impressive fashion with a well-earned 2-1 victory over France, showing both resilience and quality before later falling to a strong England side, who ran out 4-0 winners.
Day two proved equally competitive for the Caesareans. Scotland again edged the contest, claiming a 1-0 win, before Jersey suffered another slender defeat – this time to France – despite delivering one of their most disciplined and determined performances of the tournament.
Jersey saved one of their best displays for the final fixture, earning an excellent 1-1 draw against double world champions England. The island side looked set for a memorable victory after taking a 1-0 lead and holding it deep into the closing stages. However, a deflected long-range effort in the final minute denied them the win.
There was individual recognition for Jersey goalkeeper Nelson Azevedo, who was named Goalkeeper of the Tournament after a series of outstanding performances between the posts.
