A STRONG Jersey contingent will be in action this weekend as ten island junior squash players represent Dorset at the Junior Inter Counties Stage 1 event in Somerset.

The competition, which features eight counties, is being hosted across Millfield School and the Victoria Club in Street and marks the highest number of Jersey juniors selected for county representation in many years.

Leading the way is recent Island Games competitor Will Turpin, who will line up at number one for the Dorset Boys Under-19s while continuing his studies at Warwick University. He is joined in the squad by fellow Jersey player Charlie Le Lay.

In the Boys Under-15s, Gerry McMahon takes the number one spot, with Theo Matthews included. Jersey is particularly well represented in the Girls Under-15s, where Georgie Binet, Evelyn Boleat and Azelie Binet form a Dorset second team, providing all three with their first taste of county-level competition.

The Boys Under-13s see Ollie Turpin and Cameron Casely selected, while the youngest player on the trip is nine-year-old Wilder Binet. Fresh from winning both the Under-9 and Under-11 titles at a recent Dorset County event, Binet will play at number one for Dorset in the Boys Under-11s.

Commenting on the trip, parent organisers, Kate Cadigan and Susan Turpin, said: “It’s fantastic to have ten Jersey junior players representing the Island at county level, the highest number in many years.

“With eight counties competing in the event, the juniors will hopefully be inspired to push their training to the next level in the coming season.”

The team would like to offer their thanks to Jersey Sport for their travel assistance funding grants.
