LAST-MINUTE heroics were the theme of the weekend in Premiership 1, as Jersey Wanderers and Madeira both struck decisive 90th-minute winners to cap a dramatic round of local football.
Wanderers’ stoppage-time triumph over St Brelade saw them reclaim their place at the top of the table, while Madeira secured their first three points of the campaign in equally thrilling fashion against relegation rivals St Peter.
Grouville First edged past Sports Club of Jersey to seal their place in the next round of the JFA Cup. Meanwhile, Sports Club of Jersey Women reinstated their position at the top of the Cherry Godfrey Women’s Division.
Premiership 1
Premiership 1 action returned with Jersey Wanderers determined to restore their place at the top of the table and despite a formidable St Brelade side standing in their way, the division’s standout fixture of the season delivered all three points to the red-and-white stripes.
The visitors made the ideal start, with Arthur Illingworth guiding in a Jay Newton cross after just nine minutes as the league leaders settled confidently on away soil.

St Brelade, however, found their response on the half-hour mark. A blocked Sam Luce clearance fell invitingly to Ryan Le Cornu, who took a composed touch onto his right foot before drilling home the equaliser.
The game remained finely poised at the interval, and the balance continued deep into the second half.
Wanderers eventually re-established their lead after 83 minutes when Josh Coutanche converted from a Kylron Pierre delivery, a mirror of Newton’s earlier assist, sparking celebrations as the visitors looked well positioned to close out the contest.
But St Brelade were far from finished. Sustained pressure in the closing stages culminated in a superb stoppage-time strike from Will Yates, whose acrobatic effort from the edge of the area found the far corner in the 94th minute, seemingly securing a point apiece.
Yet the drama did not end there. With seconds remaining, a long throw-in was flicked on into the path of Archie Corbett, who jinked beyond his marker and showed impressive composure to slot home the winner with the final kick of the match, a remarkable conclusion to an exceptional encounter.
At the opposite end of the table, the late drama was equally compelling as Madeira secured a crucial 3-2 victory over St Peter to register their first league win of the campaign.
The visitors struck early through Diogo Velosa, who’s eighth goal of the season gave Madeira a firm grip on proceedings during the opening exchanges.
St Peter, however, restored parity on the stroke of half-time when Luke Lister capitalised to send the sides into the interval level after a competitive first period.
The hosts carried that momentum into the second half and moved in front when James Frudd steered home a well-placed cross to make it 2-1.
But in a match that ebbed and flowed throughout, Madeira again found a response. Henrique Cristóvão scored as he was sent one-on-one by Delfino Figueira from a free-kick delivery to bring the sides level once more.
Before Figueira provided the decisive moment in the 90th minute, turning in the winner from another dead-ball cross with a header.
Madeira were forced to navigate a portion of the match with ten players following a sin-bin, yet showed resolve and efficiency from set pieces to claim their first three points of the season, a result that could prove vital in their battle at the bottom.
The JFA ‘Le Riche Trophy’ saw Grouville First secure their place in the next round with a narrow yet controlled 2-1 victory over Premiership 2 outfit Sports Club of Jersey.
Grouville delivered a composed and authoritative first-half display. Archie Drummond broke the deadlock after just eight minutes, before Harrison Moon doubled the advantage with a well-taken finish ahead of the interval.
Sports Club of Jersey found a route back into the contest through Andre Franco on the stroke of half-time, but despite a spirited second-half effort from the hosts, the earlier damage had been done.
Grouville managed to ensure Franco’s strike remained a consolation at the final whistle.
Championship 1
Jersey Wanderers Reserves returned to winning way as they beat mid-table rivals Grouville Reserves 4-0 at home.
A blistering start saw Wanderers take a 3-0 lead after just 29 minutes. Miguel Freitas opened the scoring with Zac Traynor and Jack Browning adding to the tally.
The dominant performance was capped by substitute Jay Mallinson scoring with ten minutes remaining in the tie.
Cherry Godfrey Women’s Division
Sunday morning delivered a statement victory from Sports Club of Jersey, who overcame Rozel Rovers 4-2 courtesy of a superb hat-trick from Vanessa Ramos.
Rozel made the brighter start, with Emily Davies opening the scoring after just seven minutes. But Ramos flipped the momentum with a quickfire double shortly after the half-hour mark.
The visitors restored parity through Daisy-Mae Kilpatrick before half-time, ensuring an evenly poised contest at the interval.
Sports Club, however, asserted control in the second period. Carla Vidinha edged them back in front with a composed finish on 74 minutes, before Ramos completed her hat-trick just seven minutes later to put the result beyond doubt and secure a well-earned three points.
