Haywards Heath 17
JRFC Colts 22

Player of the Match: Will Wilson

Challenging weather conditions before kick-off and throughout the match made for a testing afternoon of rugby for Jersey RFC Colts for their away trip to Haywards Heath last weekend.

The opening exchanges were evenly contested, with both teams matching each other physically and exchanging penalties. Alex Edwards impressed early on with several textbook tackles in defence for the visitors.

Haywards Heath gained the upper hand in the first half, producing some fluent attacking play out wide and finishing their chances with precision to take the lead. However, Jersey responded strongly after the break, their first try came following excellent work from the forward pack, allowing Alex Powell to cross the line.

Jersey’s Will Wilson proved a constant threat to the home side, with several powerful, line-breaking carries, earning him the opposition’s Man of the Match award.

As the pressure mounted, Jersey continued to test the Haywards Heath defence, and their persistence was rewarded with a decisive try from the impressive Sonny Barrow to snatch a late lead.

Although Haywards Heath finished the game strongly, a late handling error brought proceedings to an end, securing a hard-fought victory for Jersey.
