Final-round heroics

With the final day still to go Team Jersey have outstripped expectations by some distance, adding another three golds, five silvers and ten bronzes to their overall total. Jersey are currently third in the table, after a late flurry of golds from Bermuda knocked them out of second spot behind strongly-placed leaders the Isle of Man.

Pride of place goes to Jersey golfer Gavin O’Neill, who overcame a six-stroke deficit on the final day to take gold at Port Royal, to earn Jersey men’s first individual gold since 1997. He also picked up a bronze alongside Matthew Parkman, Sam Crenan and Nick Wildman in the team competition.

Emily Bashforth’s picture is being regularly shown on the electronic scoreboard at poolside and its rather stern visage belies the real-life podium smiles the crowd are getting used to. The 17-year-old won individual gold for the fourth day running with another super show at the National Sports Center last night.

Her team-mate Gio Guarino won his first individual Games gold in the 200m breast-stroke, a well-deserved reward for the De La Salle student’s efforts this week.

There were also some really super silver-bronze combinations: Hazel Le Cornu and Robbie Stenhouse on the athletics track and Richard Tanguy and Greg Mansell in the cyclists final outing, the spectacular town criterium.

Shooting and gymnastics also added to their impressive totals, leaving Jersey with a five day total of 68 medals, with more likely in the rather shortened programme today, which will end with the closing ceremony and the handing over of the IGA flag to Jersey for 2015.

Jersey have final day medal opportunities on the track, shooting ranges and the squash and tennis courts.
