‘Youth policy will pay off’

Carter, who has competed at every Island Games since Jersey in 1997, notes that his team will face stiff competition for medals in Bermuda.

‘If I’m candid, it’s going to be very tough,’ he said. ‘It really does depend on who’s there, which we don’t know at this stage – we know Guernsey will be good and I’m sure Bermuda will be also. I’m not sure if Ynys Môn is going, but if they are, they’re sure to be strong – they had three very strong sailors in the Isle of Wight. That’s three really good teams already, making it a tough competition.’

In Shetland 2005, Jersey sailing was highly successful, winning team gold, two individual silvers and one bronze medal. Since then, however, Jersey has

returned from the past three Games without a sailing medal of any description.

But Carter thinks it’s a good sign for the future of Jersey sailing that three relatively young competitors have qualified for this year’s team.
