THE main road through St Peter will finally be open from today after six months of being closed.
Eastbound road users will no longer be diverted along Rue de la Hague, or as far as the top of Jubilee Hill for those travelling in the opposite direction.
However, will not quite be plain sailing for motorists and cyclists negotiating the busy centre of the western parish – traffic lights will be used for a section outside the Methodist Church for the time being.
The main road closure was due to the Infrastructure Department overseeing the upgrade of mains drains in the area after it transpired that the drainage network would not be able to cope with waste from new housing developments passed in the 2022 Bridging Island Plan.
Such over-capacity has also led to a giant ‘attenuation tank’ being dug in the area to store waste until it can be properly processed at Bellozanne. That project is due to complete early next year.
The main road closure – and subsequent diversions – initially caused traffic chaos in St Peter, especially along the narrow Rue de la Pointe, which became one way along a section.
Some motorists also used Rue du Bocage and other lanes as thoroughfares; however, road users appeared to get used to the temporary system.
Once both lanes are open near M&S, single lane closures will move back down Grande Route de Saint-Pierre to connect properties to the new sewer.
The final phase of the project will involve a lane of the main road being closed between its junction with La Rue de L’Eglise and Rue de St Clement next month.
