A REFORM Jersey Deputy has confirmed she will seek a second term as St Saviour Deputy at June’s election.
Deputy Raluca Kovacs became the first Romanian national to be elected to the States Assembly, when she secured one of the five seats on offer in St Saviour four years ago.
Since then, she has served on the Public Accounts Committee and the Economic and International Affairs Scrutiny Panel and won the CPA’s New Parliamentarian of the Year Award for her work on youth engagement, equality, good governance, and public service.
She said: “Representing St Saviour has been a privilege, but I know many Islanders are still feeling real pressure, particularly with the cost of living.
“I have focused on practical solutions that make a difference, and I believe we need to stay focused on careful spending, strong scrutiny, and supporting those who need it most in the years ahead.
“I hope parishioners will support me to continue that work.”
During her time in the Assembly, Deputy Kovacs has brought propositions which have secured additional paid parental leave for parents of premature and sick newborn babies, established financial support for Islanders competing in off-island competitions and driving a review of the social housing rent system to reduce rental stress.
She has represented Jersey internationally through the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, BIMR Women Parliamentarians, and the Assemblée Parlementaire de la Francophonie.
Deputy Kovacs becomes the second member of Reform Jersey to confirm they will be standing at the upcoming election, after party leader Deputy Sam Mézec confirmed he would seek one of the nine Islandwide Senatorial seats.
Deputy Mézec said: “I am delighted that Raluca is running for re-election. She has been a strong voice for her community and has made a positive and constructive contribution in the Assembly. She is the epitome of a hard-working local Deputy, and I know she has much more to give if she is re-elected by the people of St Saviour.”
Islanders will head to the polls on Sunday 7 June, when all 49 seats in the Assembly will be up for grabs.
