HOLIDAYMAKERS returning from Europe will still have to leave the cheese and sausages behind, after the Environment Minister confirmed that there is no plan to lift Jersey’s ban on personally importing meat and dairy products any time soon.

Responding to a question from Deputy Hilary Jeune, Deputy Steve Luce said that the ban on imports from the EU, European Economic Area states, and Switzerland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands, was “in place to protect Jersey livestock from highly infectious diseases”.

The diseases include African Swine Fever, PPR and foot and mouth disease.

A similar ban is currently in place in the UK, Guernsey and Isle of Man.

“We continue to monitor the disease situation in EEA countries and constantly review the information and disease risk,” he said. “The intention is to lift the restrictions once the epidemiological situation in Europe improves which may need to acceptable risk for Jersey livestock population.”
